Faster copying from a DVD to a hard drive

I did a copy using the file manager from a DVD to a hard drive.

It took forever. Is there a faster way?

So ... you did copy+paste of selected icons (from DVD) to a folder (on HDD) ?

and you did that using Caja, or Thunar, or another file manager? Which file manager did you use ?

I use Thunar at all times unless Caja pops up. I selected the entire contents of a DVD and selected Copy from within Thunar and selected a directory on my hard drive.

Typical copy times were around 15 minutes.

It all depends on

  • the amount data (gigabytes?)
  • the Optical Drive's writing speed,
  • the method of connection to the Optical Drive (SATA or USB), and
  • the quality of the Optical Disc blank that is being used.

Given those constraints, the system is probably performing the task in an optimized fashion, automatically, based on how those factors interplay.

Thanks Eric for the help.
