From Windows to macOS to Linux

Let me start by saying I’ve been a Windows user for 22 years and never thought I would make the switch, but the privacy issues with Windows are now too much.

I bought a MacBook last week to give macOS a go, but I did not find it very intuitive and I’m not a massive fan of apple. So, after watching a few interviews with Wimpy I decided to install Ubuntu MATE(17.10) on it and I was not disappointed.

The Welcome screen was a massive help as was the tweak tool. The UI is intuitive and it has a good looking traditional DE. I’ve only encountered a few bugs so far and they’ve not been too off-putting.

I’m really enjoying working in UM and I will be switching my main system over with the next LTS.

Cheers, Clueless.

Glad to hear that. I really love the welcome app as well, I think that is one of the things Ubuntu MATE can boast a LOT about.

I use all three operating systems, and as for the experience Ubuntu MATE is on par with macOS, but I still think UM should work on the unity among apps, just like macOS or elementary OS.

Hallo coolpolygons

Linux is all about freedom, and choice.

The first thing I install on Ubuntu-Mate is synaptic, and with that I install kate (I’ve never been able to get on with gedit). So there we are, the second program installed is from the KDE environment.

The team do a lot already, however, they can’t do everything. And in any case, as soon as you install a program written in java it presents itself, well, like a java-program. And then there are snaps, I wonder how they will interact with “theming” etc.?

As Redmond and Cupertino’s offerings are not FOSS, I consider them to be in a class of their own, which I avoid whenever possible. :penguin: If I can use Linux, why would I want to use anything else?

I inherited a MacBookPro from my son that had Ubuntu installed along some variation of MacOS. I took the bold step of jettisoning the Mac OS and installed a totally clean UM onto it and have not looked back.
Nice hardware, but the Ubuntu Mate is very, very good, I just don’t like being trapped in Apple ecosystem as a bottom feeder. On the Mac hardware it works a treat!!!

Just like to confirm that I to am still a Mac User but not that keen on latest Mac os trendy developments or how its ape-ing into Microsoft closed secretive ‘proprietory systems’. So I choose Linux mate as my favourite open alternative, even over and above Elementary os (which is still a very good mac like alternative which I do normally recommend to those less tech savvy. I still have dual boot on my laptop for Windows (os8) and Ubuntu mate but hardly ever use WIndows now even in a school environment. I still have an old Mac (PPC) and only keep that going due to specialist software that wont run on anything else (being over 20 years old and still going). I am lucky in that many of my day to day software programs run on Mac Windows and Linux. One of those little software gems I use daily is SCRATCH coding (also available on the raspberry pic Ubuntu mate version). Spoilt for choice!
