Gimp install not functioning in 18.04

I have several computers running various linux distros. My office (work) machine is running Ubuntu Mate. My play machine is currently running MX.
Installed gimp on the office computer and when it is opened it displays the left side tool window and a large blank central window.
office computer:

Distribution Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS

Also have installed gimp on the "play" computer. when opened it displays two vertical tool box "windows" a central window that shows the selected image and a horizontal drop down menu at the top of the screen. This seems normal to me.
play computer:

After uninstalling gimp I have done reinstall on the office (Ubuntu Mate) computer using the Boutique with the same result.
Is there a file that does not get removed using "uninstall" that needs to be deleted ?
Any ideas ?

Perhaps you could look to see if you have a .gimp-2.8 folder in your home directory. This is normally a hidden file so you may have to check the box under Caja, View, Show Hidden Files. This folder could be holding you back from getting the views under Gimp that you would like to see. Move it to Trash, re-install Gimp and see if Gimp then appears to your liking.

Good luck Doug.

Mdooley,
Thank you for the info. Deleting the hidden .gimp-2.8 folder did the job. I would add that it is better to have uninstalled gimp first before deleting the hidden folder. I still had gimp installed when I zapped the .gimp-2.8 folder & needed to use synaptic package manager to uninstall the gimp package. The Software Boutique "remove" wouldn't let me remove gimp. But all is well & I had a good time. Got some good digio (cardio for geeks)
Thanks
Doug
