I’m thinking of experimenting with the file /boot/grub/themes/ubuntu-mate/theme.txt and also replacing some of the images located /boot/grub/themes/ubuntu-mate/ Has this been done prior ? any suggestions relating to changing grub splash TIA Pete

You can always experiment and suggest your proposed GRUB design changes here. I haven’t seen anyone with a custom Ubuntu MATE GRUB theme yet. Changing it before 16.04 is unlikely, as the development has now reached UI freeze.
