Help with content creation on Ubuntu MATE

Hey guys, Jacob here.

What are some apps that I can use on Ubuntu MATE to do content creations?

Video Editor
Audio Editor
Screen Recorder
Drawing App
etc.

Thanks!

I don’t know much about audio/video, but I often use Inkscape for vector drawing and GIMP for image editing (which I guess are not really MATE specifically, but integrate really well with it)

Seconding GIMP and Inkscape. You can install them from the archive or get newer versions as Snaps (that don’t [yet] follow the system theme).

For drawing, a lot of people like KDE’s Krita. Definitely not integrated into MATE, but that doesn’t’ always matter if it’s an app that works for you.

For an audio editor: Audacity. Also very helpful is SoundConverter.

I’ve never tried it, but I know Pitivi is a video editor that uses the GTK+ toolkit like MATE (and GNOME). Kdenlive is a KDE video editor I’ve also heard of.

The Ubuntu Studio suite of programs should cover most or all of your needs. It can be installed onto Ubuntu Mate. To install the full Ubuntu Studio suite of programs (but not the accompanying XFCE desktop), do the following:

Open a terminal and copy, paste and execute the following command:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade && sudo apt-get install ubuntustudio-audio ubuntustudio-audio-plugins ubuntustudio-graphics ubuntustudio-video

Then , if you intend to use some of the audio real-time production programs, this command:

sudo apt-get install linux-image-4.8.0-58-lowlatency

And, finally, this command (again, only if you intend to do real-time audio production)

sudo apt-get install linux-headers-4.8.0-58-lowlatency

If you don’t intend to do much audio real-time production, you don’t really need to install the the low latency kernel or headers, and so could miss those steps from above.

When you are done, reboot

One thing you should bear in mind is that after installing the Ubuntu Studio suite of programs, you will find some of your main menus will become ludicrously long. Thus, you may well wish to add some sub-folders to your main menu to make it more manageable. Should you decide you need to do that, but are unsure how, let me know on here and I will explain.

What I have tried and used so far

Video editor “Pro” => Blender / cinerrela 5.1 / Kdenlive
Video Editor simple-fast to use => Shotcut / Pitivi
Audio Editor => Audacity / Sound Converter
Screen Recorder => simpleScreenRecorder
Drawing App (compatible with the pen-tablet)=> MyPaint (I Love it) / Krita (More “professional”) /LazPaint
Photo => Darktable / Photivo / Lightzone / Rawtherapee / UFRaw=>mix well with GIMP
Image Manipulation => GIMP / Pinta / Krita /
Image/album/folder-photo viewer => Xnview
Image Batch processing => Xnconvert (the best of the best in my opinion)
etc. => et cætera version 16.04.3 LTS

Edit: I would add:

Design / Flyers / Cards => Scribus (easy to use with templates) / Inkscape (More pro)
Measurment pixels/cm/pica/etc… => Screen Ruler (use the right click for options => “Track the mouse”)

Files - folder transfer direct computer to computer (wifi / LAN)=> Nitroshare (even between different OS! so easy to use that my kids use it too)

Note taking / organizer => Basket Note Pads

For video editing, definitely Shotcut (shotcut.org).
