How can I use my wired webcam as a security camera

I would like to use my Microsoft Corp. LifeCam HD-5000 as makeshift security camera.

The cord is long enough, so I will not need an extension.

I found Alfred Cam but it looks like it needs a wireless webcam.

I am sure I can write a script or install something like Ispy.

I do not need to be able to send video to my phone or maybe I do.

I am going figuring to record a 4 hr. video on my 320 Gb Maxtor drive.

What do you think?

sure, take a look at guvcview

basic example: ffmpeg -i /dev/video0 output.mp4

Also, look for zoneminder, open source.
