Hello, I'm new to MATE, and I've been trying to put the dock applet on the right side of my panel. The dock takes up a large amount of empty space towards the right, however, and I see no option to remove the empty space or put the icons on the right side of the vast amount of space taken up by the dock. Is this a bug, or an option I'm just not seeing? (maybe something hidden away in dconf?)
Edit: Turns out this only happens when using the Mutiny layout, using Redmond works fine. Thing is, Redmond doesn't autohide the title bar when a window is maximized. Trying to search for how to do this only brings up results telling you how to do so for base Ubuntu. I've changed the title to reflect what I'm trying to do now.
If you mean the Plank, it should have settings to center or justify left/right if I remember correctly. You can also go vertical on the left/right or go to the top. I have not been using Mate in a while so I don’t recall the specific steps. Also, you could select another layout whereby the Plank is not active and adjust the taskbar. I think they have a good guide that touches on some of these issues whereby you may find the answer/solution you are looking for.
I'm not using Plank, I'm using the dock applet (the one found in the Mutiny layout).
Here's an image showing what I'm talking about (I didn't move the mouse after right clicking):
You said “dock” not task bar so I thought perhaps you meant the Plank. Try the Welcome Center or Mate Tweaks whereby you can select different Layouts like Pantheon. Traditional/Redmond, Mutiny, etc. Those layouts might provide the solution you need. Did you read the link to the guide that provides a lot of good suggestions? Mate is extremely configurable and has several easy layouts pre-installed.
I've tried different layouts as a starting point, none gave me what I wanted. The empty space is gone in Redmond but the title bar doesn't autohide when a window is maximized. Mutiny does that but with it comes the empty space in the dock. Trying to search for how to autohide the titlebar in Redmond only brings up results telling me how to autohide it in base Ubuntu, which is why I edited my post.
