How to disable window list tooltips

Is there a way to disable tooltips in the window list panel widget? I’ve run dconf-editor and turned off every tooltip entry I can find, but I still see tooltips telling me what I can already see from the window list tab. I don’t know why there isn’t an easy way to get rid of these annoying things.

I’m running Ubuntu-Mate 16.10 64 bit.

Thanks

Hello,

if you're using Compiz as window manager, you can turn it off with the program CompizConfig Settings-Manager.
This program is not installed per default.
You can install it via
sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager
or via your software management tool.

After that you will find the CompizConfig Settings Manager in Systemsettings.
Please turn off Thumbnail Window Preview.

Perhaps you may need to logoff and relogin.

Best regards

This appears to work with my 16.10 install: dconf Editor, org, mate, panel, general, scroll down to tooltips-enabled, then set Use default value to OFF and set Custom value to False. Click on Apply.

Good luck jhalprin.

I’ve already set that to false, but I still get the tooltips. I’ve set every tooltips entry I can find to false to no avail.

I don’t understand this. Is there a problem with dconf-editor maybe? The entry you mention does say false, but it’s still set to true internally, apparently

Thanks

Joe

I forgot I was using compiz. Anyway, I tried what you suggest, but it didn’t work. still see tooltips.

Thanks

Joe

Is there maybe a config file I can edit manually? This wasn’t such a problem in 16.04.

Thanks

Joe

Have you tried disabling any compositor that you might be using? My 16.10 for instance, displays conky better without the Marco (Software compositor) setting in MATE Tweak. If memory serves, since I’m not sitting in front of that machine, I set 16.10 to use Compton.

I don’t know if this will help at all but good luck.

Still no luck, thanks though.

Joe

Log out, log in. If no joy, reboot.

That’s about it from my perspective.

I have testet my tip with the CompizConfig Settings Manager in Ubuntu MATE 16.04 and in Ubuntu MATE 16.10 (in an VirtualBox) and it works fine.

Not on my machine. I find this very odd that a solution will work for some people and not others. I notice your dialog is in German, maybe they changed the distro for Germany or something.

The lack of consistency is kind of bothersome.

Thanks though,

Joe

This works in 16.04 for regular tooltips (ie panel launchers such as the default firefox icon) but not for the window list.

OK then, I am a bit lost. What is the window list? Where does one find it?

That’s the default windows list in the bottom panel of the standard “Ubuntu MATE” panel layout.
Note: maybe this works for you in 16.10, I’m not saying it doesn’t, I just haven’t had the chance to test it yet.

No, that's all the same. It's just another language pack.

Maybe I'm wrong? Did you mean the tooltips with the window description (a) or the thumbnail of the windows (b)?

I was talking about the ones with the window description (a).

Thanks

Joe

to disable tooltip go into compiz settings manager, check to enable " opacity brightness and saturation " then go into " opacity brightness and saturation " and under "opacity" tab click new, in the window box add " tooltip " put window value to " 0 "

I’m not using Compiz (I’m using Marco). I’ve tried using Compiz and went through this as advised by several people, however it did nothing with the tooltips.

I’ve pretty much given up, having tried all the “fixes” I could find on the net. Thanks though. It’s hard for me to understand why it’s so hard to add options to remove tooltips. I know I’m not the only one that finds them really annoying. </rant>

Thanks

Joe
