I have no idea where it installed to or where I can place ROMs. Would anyone know?

You can just run mame from the command line by typing "mame".
The default search paths for ROMs is this:
$HOME/mame/roms;/usr/local/share/games/mame/roms;/usr/share/games/mame/roms
Also you can start "mame MYROM.zip" to directly launch a game, which works sometimes better than launching from the UI.
