Is there any method to force caja desktop to not open? Caja is a great file manager, but the desktop is less stable than xfdesktop4.

remove the execute bit. you can find it in /usr/bin/caja

Previously, I wrote an article about installing xfdesktop (XFCE desktop) without regard to Thunar. I feel now I have enough information about Thunar for the average user to enable it as a full replacement for Caja (or Nemo, if you're into that) so users can install it and enjoy a different desktop.

Not perfect but its running with mate now at least as good as on xfce

As i did niw also encounter several problems with xfdesktop i wrote my own desktop file manager using claude sonnet ai.
It does depend on -lm gio and gtk3. Also runs on icewm but nit on joewm
