I have a lot of Spanish friends and the South American drink is served here as well. They are positive that it is called MAH-tay. Wimpy, you were right all along. Of course, I have heard Ubuntu fractured far more than Mate.
I still call it “Mate” (pronounced m8!).
There was an earlier post by someone that posted a rant on YouTube, the guy was complaining about the way it should be pronounced because of the way it is spelt, I must say although I didn’t appreciate all his swearing, he did have a point!.
Maté pronounced “Mah-Tay” (or something like that!).
Mate pronounced “m8” (ma-eight or something like that!. )
See ya mate!.
People can call it what they like as far as I am concerned and anyone who absolutely insists it should be called one way or another, even to the extent of posting online rants about it, is demonstrably a ******.
…sorry
…in a bad mood today
The ******* Tories got back in…
My post was not a rant, you can call it what you wish, but my point was that there is no need for Wimpy to start calling it something else, just because some other people have changed the name.
Bob, I wasn’t accusing you of ranting mate!
I was talking about that English guy who did a you tube vid.
Please don’t think I was talking about you!
I have THE solution ! “Mate”( spanish or portuguese ) pronounced like “latte” ( italian ) , everyone knows . BUT , we can use : “the Ubuntu made by Martin Wimpress” ; it pronounced "di youbyountyou maid bye barrdan vyounprrezz ". Simple , isn’t it ?
I agree with stevecook172001, people can call it what they like.
In response to how to pronounce Mate in Spanish, this guy says the correct pronunciation:
I second you sir.
Never thought about it being about the herb.
It’s the herb, which in Spanish is pronounced “MAH-tay”, which rhymes with “latte” and has the same accent on the first syllable (NOT the last one).
SAY IT! SAY IT!
the previous video had reports of “not available in your country” so replaced it with this new link.
The thing is with me, my default attitude is that I simply don’t care enough what comes out of someone else’s mouth in terms of how they pronounce a word to think it worthwhile getting all hot and bothered that they don’t pronounce it the way I do and I expect no more than the same courtesy from them.
However, I would go further and say that, where I do see people getting all hot and bothered about such things to the extent of insisting others must follow their suit, my instinct is to dig my heels in and deliberately persist in not pronouncing it the “correct” way just to ■■■■ them off…
Hi fellows
I guess, it doesn’t matter how someone really pronounce Mate. The important thing is, that the listener understand about what the other one does speaking. Apart from that, I predict, this question will be a discussed topic so far Ubuntu Mate does exist. So far so good! In real life we’re talking about weather, in digital life, we’re talking about right pronouncing Mate - I would say: a method to stay in contact!
@MichaelTunnell You found it again
Hi! I’m from Argentina, a Spanish native speaker, I drink mate every single day of my life and I am doing so since I was five years old. I’m also fluent in English, Italian and German so I feel confident that I’m quite qualified to add value to the discussion. Spanish phonetics is quite straightforward and free from the convolutions and inconsistencies of English (if you think I’m being chauvinist please google why George Bernard Shaw said that ‘fish’ should be spelled ‘ghoti’). For you people with some knowledge of Italian, the MA syllable in MATE should be pronounced as the first ‘ma’ in ‘mamma’ and the TE syllable as the ‘te’ in ‘tedesco’. For the German inclined MA is like in ‘Macht’ and TE is as in “Teppich”. And for the unfortunate English hostages, the MA is as in ‘machine’ and the TE exactly as in ‘text’. You can hear a fairly good pronunciation in http://es.thefreedictionary.com/mate for the sake of closure. And just for the record, I’m a Xfce guy. Cheers!
I didn’t know the original video was taken down so when I saw it, since I wanted to post it here, I knew I had to fix this travesty and find a working version.
