How can I REMOVE the edge [white-box] in Grub 2.02? (See picture)
I used "grub-customizer" for my Ubuntu-Mate 18.04-2 and the edge [white-box] shows special characters with $ when I use a background-picture.

The short answer is you cannot remove it. IMHO the most probable reason is that grub now is using wrong character set. Some more information can be found here:

Coordinates of the console are constant and hard-coded. They can be changed using a patch
At first glance, to apply any patch woud mean downloading the source
patching the source
compiling the source
direct injection or creating a deb file
with the risk you break your boot loader and need a live cd/usb to
re-install grub 2 into the MBR
I assume you will not take that risk?

That was my problem with the edge of Grub menu:
I've done it again with Grub Customizer and use another font from another theme and now the edge of the menu is linear.
