How-To run Several MONITORS in Ubuntu-MATE 16.04.3 LTS (Xenial Xerus)?

:relaxed: Greetings to everybody and hope your`all OK .
It has been a wail and in that time I have had a good and comfortable time with my MATE and my 3 monitors.
But now I am back with the same issue I posted in December 2016.
“Several MONITORS in Ubuntu-MATE 16.04”
I did an upgrade to 16.04.3 LTS with my disks fresh and clean.
I still run my Nvidia GTX960 graphic card and I was quiet confidante about at least controlling my three monitors.
BUT…
It seems that what ever I do the 16.04.3 version refuses to acknowledge my “3 monitors” and only gives me
ONE Monitor. This one is connected to the graphic card through a VGA slot.
The two others are through a HDMI and a DISPLAY PORT.

  • The veered part was that al three of them were up and going through the instillation.
    SO please help guys…
    ps.
I went over to Synapic Package Manager and found that a big amount of the “Nvidia Packages” wasn’t included
in v.16.04.3. Could some of these packages solve my issue ???

have you installed nvidia drivers through system > preferences > hardware > restricted drivers?
that should also install Nvidia X server settings GUI.

If still having problems you can use xrandr to set up multiple monitors. see
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/xrandr

I am using 1280x1024 monitors with a 3820x2560 hidpi and had to set up with both nvidia x server setting gui and xrandr.
Everything nice and clear but still have trouble with moving windows; they tend to ‘snap’ onto borders and change to a shape I do not want---- still working on this…

and that is so many times that I have lost count.

  • The thing is I just cant get this to work and this is something I relay don’t understand…

Could someone please take a look at this :unamused::expressionless::worried::disappointed:

Chiming in about this; there is a neat program which makes manipulating XrandR practically painless… if everything is working with it. Try installing arandr and see if that has any effect on this issue.

Else one can learn how to manipulate xrandr by hand to add display resolutions for devices if the card can handle it. Try using cvt to generate a modeline with the X, Y and refresh one is seeking and then use said modeline with xrandr --newmode to add the resolution, then xrandr --addmode to assign said mode at a particular display.

xrandr by itself will generate available displays. None of the above is any bit useful if the display outputs available do not exist according to xrandr.

Did I ever thank you for “Chiming - In” on this @tiox ???

  • SO AGAIN @tiox , THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR BEING HER.
Your defiantly one of those ho RELAY HELPED.
    THANKS` Mannn !

My multi monitor setup works currently. I had some issues getting the display ports to play nice with my ASUS displays, but apparently this is a widespread issue. “Just unplug and replug everything in a million times” says the internet. Well, if it works…

So onto the issue at hand: How can I expand a game across my three monitors? Mate (16.04.3) recognizes the increased resolution as 5760x1080 instead of 1920x1080. The game purportedly supports multi displays well (X Rebirth). The GPU is top notch for this (Nvidia GTX 1070) with the latest proprietary driver (390.25).

Where do I need to start reading and researching in order to learn the appropriate skills to tackle this problem?

And Hallow to @calfret,
I have read and read and read…
and haven’t really got to the point were my problem is solved.
The thing is, after a vile my third monitor witch is connected through the display port on my Nvidia, stops working.

  • Why This Is…
Dont really know, but I have always had a suspicion towards MATEs software updater. I have more than one time said this in all the Ubuntu forums Iw been searching for help.
But no one and that is no body has ever answered me on this.
So I started to contact “Linux Users” outside the forums and they all came back with with the same suspicion and the proper answer on how to get 2, 3 or even more monitors working correctly and stable.

  • IS TO CHANGE DISTRO !

My self, I`m going for DEBIAN and its no need for any explanation for this choice, I guess…

I could send you links to all my findings but would then need your email.

On how to “EXPAND YOUR GAME ACROSS AL YOUR MONITORS”, I came over this solution one time.

Really HOP it works for you and again, contact me if you are interested in using allot of your time in reading.

Do your monitors not work with HDMI? One of the recommendations I stumbled across was to change the display port cables for HDMI. Presto! the monitor worked fine. The trouble is that my GPU has one DVI slot, one HDMI slot, and three Display Port slots. So to get 3 monitors working without some kind of adapter or splitter I was going to need DP. getting the cables were the cheaper option over the adapters, but it did not work for me.

Some solutions reccomended going into CSM settings in your UEFI BIOS and setting PCIe boot to “Legacy”. This did not work for me.
I downloaded the latest video driver. This did not work for me.
Some people recommended unplugging the power cable and plugging it back in. This did not work for me.

What worked was unplugging the DP cable from the monitor then plugging it back in. Boom! three functional displays staring at me from my Mate desktop. I opened up a terminal and ran screenfetch (this is a great utility by the way), and it shows that I am running 5760x1080. So Linux knows I have three displays, and everything is peachey king.

Nvidia Surround is not on Linux as far as I’m aware. If it is then I am certainly unaware of how to get to it and set it up. I suppose I need to read into XrandR and ArandR to see if that will solve my issue.

I’m SO GLAD you ended up in this topic @calfret, I did the “unplug&replugging” (don’t know how many times) and… they are ALL BACK :fireworks: :tada: :grinning: :tada: :fireworks: .
Not to say that @tiox haven’t given me valuable knowledge on this issue, because that he has.

  • So first of all, you really shooed take a look at all that @tiox comes with in this topic and do remember his name .
And then back to Mr.Russell, I`m running the GTX960 witch has the same connection slots as yours and you are most definitely looking at coming issues (I think… hope (SORRY… :worried:…)).
In the beginning (I now actually remember) I did the “unplug&replugging” to and it worked well until… I don’t know, cant remember… but “Software Updater” were involved. So just watch out for what you let in. But really, lets just hope that our solution continues to work for us.

  • Screenfetch, haven’t tried that one and I absolutely will.

Sorry for not giving you answers you need Gabe, I`m totally lost on this issue.
But when all is grey because of endless reading I normally pop over to YouTube.
So see if this can help you:

And THANK YOU for making me stay with MATE.
