I can't watch twitter video or gfycat in any browser in Ubuntu Mate 16.04

So I have this rather frustrating problem. Thanks to the welcome screen, I installed third party codecs. I also installed Flash from the software boutique.

So I can watch Youtube without any problems. According to their test page found here: https://www.youtube.com/html5, my browser is compatible for all video types.

But as I said, for Twitter, I can only hear audio but no video. For gfycat links, the image flashes for a second and that’s it.

I’m sort of at a loss where to turn to. I even tried installing ubuntu-restricted-extras but that didn’t resolve the issue. I have the same problem on Chromium.

So as I said, I’m at a loss. I’d really appreciate some guidance. Thanks.

Is this a problem with me or are other users also experiencing this problem?

Just to clarify: my primary browser is Firefox. But I’ve tried Chromium and Chrome and can’t watch these two sites on any of these browsers.

YouTube uses HTML5 where possible. I may be wrong, but I think the Twitter videos (especially Vine ones) use Flash. These never really worked when I used Chromium, but are just fine in Google Chrome.

I’m not sure if there is something wrong with Flash system-wide at the moment, since I can’t seem to get it to work in Nuvola Player (in your case, Chromium). :frowning:

Oh sorry I just realized I never clarified that I use Firefox as my primary browser and tested chromium but those two sites didn’t work there either.

I don’t know…becuase gfycat uses only html5 and is not dependant on flash, so why isn’t that site working? But either way I tried both sites on Google Chrome and the problem still persisted ;(.

Just as an update, I do think it is a problem with Ubuntu Mate.

I switched to Kubuntu and all those sites work perfectly fine there. Can some developers please look into it?

I was also having a problem in Mate that my 360 wired controller wasn’t being recognized regardless how many times I tried to install drivers. It works fine on Kubuntu.

Just another update: I can watch those sites just fine in Xubuntu.

Also my 360 controller works fine in that DE environment as well.

So I’m fairly certain that it is a bug specific to Ubuntu Mate; if the powers that be can look into it, I’d be most grateful.

Edit: I apologize if this is the wrong place to make such a request, but I don’t know where to submit “bugs.”

SOLVED

Sorry I don’t know how to mark a thread as solved short of submitting another response. When I installed Mate, I didn’t opt to 1.) Download updates and 2.) Install third party codecs. I had seen a few video guides and it was recommended not to select these options. I thought that I could afterwards install the codecs from the Welcome Screen.

I just reinstalled the OS and this time took care to select those two options. Everything works fine and I can now watch gfycat links as well as twitter videos
