I'm trying to recreate a Ubuntu 8.10 theme with Ubuntu MATE, but I'm not sure what display manager Ubuntu 8.10 used, or what Ubuntu MATE uses

Basically, I'm asking 2 things:

  1. What is the display manager used on Ubuntu 8.10?
  2. What display manager does Ubuntu MATE use?

You gave a very old release; a quick look at the manifest of an ISO shows GDM being used (makes sense; Ubuntu 8.10 used GNOME).

For Ubuntu-MATE you didn't give a release; so I looked at the manifest of lunar and its lightdm. Ubuntu-MATE will use gdm3 (43.0 for lunar) of course; but that's a much later version than the gdm (2.20) used in Ubuntu 8.10

@guiverc Sorry about that, I'm using MATE 22.04 LTS. Are there any display managers with the same feel as the old GDM releases?

Also, thanks, @Bombilla!

I can't recall what gdm looked like back in late 2008, so can't compare anything to it.

xdm tends to make me feel like I've entered a timewarp back in time, but it may not have that effect on you (and I don't know what it reminds my brain of either).

@guiverc I found some screenshots of the Ubuntu 8.10 login screen on BetaWiki.

XDM is ancient. Love its' aesthetic though. Gives me a certain joy, especially when it's paired with CDE or WindowMaker.
