Is the software updater tool broken?

Hi @Wimpy,

the software updater (Ubuntu Mate 16.04- 64 Bit) fails saying I should check my internet connection (working fine btw), I am having to update through Synaptic which for many noobs; it would be a daunting task, is this a bug?:

I'm not sure if this is the right section on the forum, please move it if not!.

Just ran two updates with no problem. Maybe the mirror youā€™re using is down and the error message just isnā€™t descriptive enough? Try and ping the servers in your sources.list?

I have changed the software sources download location several times to no avail, the only way it will update is via Synaptic, even the terminal commands failed on a couple of occasions?.

As far as I can tell, the system is up-to-date but something isnā€™t quite right?.

How about when you run sudo apt update in a terminal?

Yep, working fine but has also failed, like I said above, I have changed my software sources download location several times so that may be the reason!:

I have done everything I know my end and it is still saying that there is no internet connection, Synaptic and the terminal are working fine?. :frowning:

I might just do a complete fresh install and see if that fixes it!.

Thanks for the replies.

I just did a complete new install keeping home intact and it still doesnā€™t work!. :frowning:

I left the default server (Germany) alone and installed all my apps and checked all settings and tried it out, still no joy?.

Suggestions anyone?.

IIRC the software updater GUI throws that error even if only ONE index fails to download. I think the culprit here is Google Earth. Iā€™ve been ignoring the error and just clicking OK.

Thanks Dave, I also ignore those warning, the odd thing is, I used the same install media on my laptop and that is okay?. (UM 16.04 64 bit).

It isnā€™t a biggy for me but might well confuse the hell out of a noob!. :frowning:

I will try updating again and maybe something will come through that will sort it out.

Does anyone know the name of the package, I can try re-installing it using a different server?.

Yup! Back in the bad old days  you got those types of errors often as repositories would be down for one reason or another. During the ā€œlong Debian winterā€ without a release, some users would ask whether Debian was discontinued when one of their servers was down.

Which package?

Software updater tool!.

My 32-bit 15.10 system was not offering upgrades to 16.04.

It was because I had the Notify me of new versions set to Long-Term support only. Changing it to ā€œAll Releasesā€ made it immediately notify me that 16.04 was available when I clicked close in the Software & Updates tool.

Its getting new packages now, running 800-2098 kB/sec from the US mirrors as the various packages download.
1500 of 2021. Can hardly wait!

Edit:
Upgrade completed and after reboot all looks well ā€“ picked up my saved session startup apps & WiFi settings. Firefox and Chrome seem to work fine. Happy camper!

I just checked and itā€™s working for me as well. Maybe launch it in terminal and see if it reveals and errors?? Sounds like youā€™ve got quite the odd issue going on. BTW I think the package is just called update-manager.

So you have this figured out or ?

Hi all,

I re-installed the packages shown above, I changed the software sources download location to ā€œMain serverā€ from Germany, I also set it to notify me of any release upgrades. I used Synaptic to do this and despite having a few new package upgrades, the tool still isnā€™t working?.

Thanks @Dave_Barnes, @pfeiffep, @anon42388993, @ouroumov, @wally333, @Justin for your input but I think I will just flatten the whole lot and completely wipe both root and home partitions as my fresh install using my trusty ā€œSomething Else Methodā€ didnā€™t seem to help!. :frowning:

Seems to me that Ubuntu 16.04 has more bugs than the ā€œInsect Houseā€ in Londonā€™s Regents Park Zoo!.

EDIT:

I downloaded a fresh copy of the 16.04 ISO and used Startup Disk Creator, I then did a complete fresh install and formatted both root and home and now it is working, the bugs appear to have left the building! (They must be following Elvis?).

Thanks to you all again for your helpful suggestions!.

Marked as [SOLVED]
