I have been in gnome 3 world for about a year and 1/2, had updated to 17.10. I thought it was faster on my hp stream. But today I added Ubuntu-Mate and I have to say its speed is just plain snappy. I had installed UM on a machine I gave to a daughter over the summer but this is nice. Its just a crisp looking and quick environment. Thanks to all involved!

If you were around for.the GNOME 2 days, MATE is most certainly a welcome change of pace.

I have been using Linux since the Mandrake 7.0, SuSe 7.0 days. Got tired of KDE and liked the feel of Gnome. I started using Ubuntu Mate a few years ago and then hopped to Manjaro and back to ubuntu gnome.
UM has come a long way since them. It is a much more polished system. And like I said in my post it is just plain snappy on my system. Plus I like the Gnome2 style
Gnome 3 is nice but UM is just quicker and feels more solid to me
