"Keeping It Real"

As I labor and toil to get out of Grad school, I nevertheless felt an indulgence was in order. I fought tooth & nail for this A in my Linux-based course; I do hope the conquered material will assist me in my endeavors to be less newbieized, and more helpful in our forum and beyond! :construction_worker:

What did the course cover, just usage or installation of Linux too?.

Hi wolfman,

It primarily covered the functions and management of operating systems in a business environment. Topics orbited memory, process, device, file, and network function management, concurrent processes, plus security and ethics. It, more or less, was the other half of a Management Information System course I took before that. It helped this newbie a little, I suppose…:cold_sweat:. Mainly, it was confined to a corporate type setting.

For instance, we covered that with business systems, a main advantage of the layered approach to system design is the same as in all cases of modular design: the system is easier to debug and modify because changes affect only limited sections of the system rather than touching all sections of the operating system. This may not help me that much, here in the forum though.

Another tidbit of my OS class taught me that the main advantages of the microkernel approach to system design typically include: 1. adding a new service does not require modifying the kernel, 2. it is more secure as more operations are done in user mode than in kernel mode, and 3. a simpler kernel design and functionality typically results in a more reliable operating system; but again, I may not find that I can do much with that here in our U-MATE world… but you never know - I’m hoping .

Hi mated,

this might interest you if you are going to set-up a small business model, it was written for Ubuntu 12.04 but can be applied to any other (later) version I should think!.

I never cease to be amazed at what possibilities are eternally lurking around every corner of the Ubuntu universe . This Ubuntu Business Box Server, in tandem with my fledgling knowledge (mostly theoretical) in these relevant areas, could make crucial aspects of my near-future consulting ambitions come to fruition. In a few months, I’ll have my second undergrad shingle out of the way (a BS:HRM to go with my BS:BBA) – on the way to an MBA – to be done with by summer 2017 :raised_hands:.

At 50, most folks won’t hire me, though – that’s the reality; so I will have to take contract work – as well as consultancy hustles. This resource that you sent me, @wolfman, makes the touch-and-go prospects of my future ‘ways & means’ seam more real, as it gives me a modicum of confidence. I tremendously appreciate the way you take me seriously; I am discovering that as I endeavor to reinvent my place in life: that not everyone does… :sob: I shall have to remember you & yours in my Will.:skull:

Thanks!
