Keyboard, mouse locked out of local session

I’m running Ubuntu Mate 18.04 LTS (a 16.04 upgrade) on Raspberry Pi 3 and noticed yesterday that my local (HDMI) session no longer accepts keyboard or mouse input. It’s setup to boot directly to a desktop without login, and it has a tightvnc server too. I can interact fine through vnc but not locally.

Originally the Logitech wireless mouse/keyboard combo worked fine so I thought the batteries had died - still didn’t work after replacing them. A wired keyboard and wired mouse were also ignored. Swapping the SD card into a different Raspberry Pi 3 resulted in the same behavior.

The computer clearly recognizes the hardware:

I thought I had a problem like the one described here but this is baffling. Help would be appreciated.

Today I tried:

  • upgrading to the bleeding edge kernel (4.14.79-v7+)
  • downgrading to the latest stable kernel (4.14-76-v7+)
  • and disabling the VNC service that I had created

None of these things restored keyboard/mouse input to the default local session (HDMI/usb). I found a new wireless Logitech mouse and verified it is recognized as an HID device (below), but it is clearly being ignored.

I’m running very low on troubleshooting ideas… can anyone provide some useful advice?

OK.... so I can't launch the mate-keyboard-properties dialog from the Control Panel, but I can open it from a terminal using sudo mate-keyboard-properties. Strangely, the keyboard model is not recognized and the list is empty:

Yes, I'm trying to open from within a VNC session. I already tried running dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration to fix the keyboard settings.

(And apparently there is no recovery mode for Ubuntu Mate?)

Pretty sure my user profile got hosed. I configured to boot into a command line, logged in, and it hung after displaying my last login time. Best I can figure, it’s related to using ‘Reset Panel’ during a VNC session but that’s only speculation. Time to start fresh :frowning:
