Hey everyone!
I’m running mate 18.04 and would like to try the KDE Desktop since I’ve been hearing a lot of good stuff about it. I’ve read a couple of times that it is not a good idea to install 2 desktop environments. Could you please enlighten me on what the disadvantages of installing the kububtu-desktop would be?
Thanks.
Hi…since you just want to check it out why not run in virtualbox?
Because I want to see how well it works with the nividia driver. Is there a way to check that in a VM?
Not as far as I know
If you just want to try KDE out, you should better install Kubuntu on a DVD or USB stick and run it as a live system. Otherwise you have to install the whole desktop environment. Don’t forget that the MATE Desktop is faster and has a lower RAM usage than KDE.

I’ll probably do that. Don’t get me wrong I’m loving mate but I’m going to write my masters thesis soon so I want to play around a bit before locking my system down.
Hi Daniel,
I’ve also been intrigued to have multiple desktop environments in a single distro and have had systems run with varying degrees of success. If your system is backed up or you’re not fussed about having to reinstall if anything goes wrong, you could give it a try with the Kubuntu packages and report back.
I’ve heard a lot of praise for the new release, I had to try it out. Just 380MB of RAM used on startup and way snappier.
