Laptop won't suspend (at all)

Hello all,

I'm not sure when it began, but my Ubuntu-Mate laptop will no longer suspend. It doesn't work when I close the lid, or if I go to Menu->Power->Suspend. In the either case, it seems to just put up the screen lock page. (But the system keeps running, so if I put it in my briefcase and go somewhere, I arrive with a very hot laptop with very little battery left.)

I'm running Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, as fully patched as I can get it. (I do notice that power-profiles-daemon has been held back...and has been held for a long time.)

MATE appears to be v 1.26.2.

I'm running lightdm 1.30.0

This laptop has an integrated GPU and an Nvidia GPU. I think I'm running just the integrated GPU (at least, I had set it up that way in the past, but the old Nvidia widget has disappeared). According to "Software and Updates", I'm running Nouveau, and "lspci | grep VGA" says I'm using Intel.

I don't have an answer, just suggestions and questions off the top of my head.

With a live image (thumb drive installer) booted, can you suspend the laptop? Both with 24.04 and 22.04. If so, can you do a full reinstall, whether on the current drive or a different drive?

Did it ever work on 24.04? Did you do an upgrade to 24.04 or was it a fresh installation?

The power settings for a laptop has settings for when it is powered by AC or battery. Are they both set correctly? Have you tried changing the settings to something else and then back again?
