Lenovo y50-70 boot problem

Hi,

I have a weird problem. The “no bootable device – insert boot disk and press any key” does not show up always. Every now and then.

Laptop is lenovo y50-70 with ubuntu mate + ssd. Sometimes changing legacy and uefi, or using default settings helps. But this time I’m stuck and can’t boot in any way.

The weird part is always that my ssd dissapears from bios. Under hard disk it’s says SM2246AA-5 - what is this exactly?

Thanks for the help!

I’ve booted to live mate from an usb stick. Still no ssd. Anybody have any idea what’s going on?

Do you still have “Secure boot” switched on?.

Secured boot shows up when you turn on UEFI. I’ve switched off UEFI. There is no setting as secure boot.

Please advise  Instead of hdd: SM there should be a SSD drive.

Hi,

take a look here and double check all your UEFI settings:

I've never used windows on this laptop.

When uefi is off, only legacy as shown: http://pastebin.com/yKm0Nb80

There is no option as secure boot anywhere. The problem is that my ssd disappears magically?

I will double check, but that really isin't the problem here I think.

The picture you show relates to BIOS security access and not UEFI afaik!.

Please check: http://pastebin.com/yKm0Nb80 and get back to me. No other settings in my bios…

See this in the meantime:

Still nothing… Same thing happens. Any thoughts?

Did you set the "boot flags" per the suggestion in the link above?.

Use the Ubuntu Live CD and open Gparted, then mark your partition(s) and right click :slightly_smiling:

Yeah I did that. The SSD doesn’t even show in BIOS… Could it be corrupt/broken?

Did you click on “Apply” after setting the flags?, did you get any messages to the contrary?.

Do you have a HDD as well as an SSD?, is there a switch in BIOS to toggle between the 2?.

See first answer here:

If the BIOS can’t see it, there is a good chance it’s failing or failed for good. SSDs being flash memory only have finite read/write cycles, eventually it packs in. I’ve seen this happen twice before (avoid cheap brands )

If you notice the computer taking a lot longer to start, it’s definitely due to an SSD failure.

What version of Ubuntu MATE are you using?

Computer worked fine. The disk started not to show up in bios. I’ve taken it out and put it in a usb hub under windows, no luck. Does not show up.

Hi!

64-bit PC (AMD64), 15.10

Thanks!

Having a disk drive not recognized in the BIOS is quite strong lead towards hardware fault. Albeit it could be just a loose connection i.e. drive/connector not sitting firmly in its slot/place.

Hi everyone,

I have the same problem. My PC Dell Optiplex 3010, latest BIOS version A17. The “no bootable device – insert boot disk and press any key” does not show up always. But if it appears, the HDD type in BIOS is SM2246AA-5, but it is a Kingston 240GB SSD indeed.
:joy:

Hello

It is a sad fact that not all SSDs are created equal, particularly when it comes to their drivers. Some SSDs enjoy a better reputation than others, essentially based on the combined effectiveness of the “driver plus SSD” package.

Can the problem be reproduced with another drive (if you happen to have one available)?
