Lost media files during my fight to get Win 10 removed so I could install MATE on laptop

Hallow Every-One. :sparkles::balloon:
When we were solving my problem on;

The idiot I am forgot to "re-connect" a docking station with a HHD I had loaded with media files.
And what happened, I guess, is that the files are almost change to some sort of Win file and are probably all corrupted.
When I connect the same HHD with the docking station to my now going MATE 16.0.4 and try to get some contact through "DISKS". - NOTHING TURNS UP......

And that is were I am to day with almost all my music...... :sob:

So is there any one with a solution to this dilemma of mine ???
:confused: :frowning_face: :disappointed: :worried: PLEASE HELP ME.

I’m not 100% sure I understand what happened. So your hybrid hard drive (HHD) isn’t showing anything when you plug it into Ubuntu MATE via the docking station, but it was working fine under Windows before it was uninstalled?

Under the Disks utility, do you see the drive listed at all, or simply “No partitions”?

I’m presuming it’s connected via USB, if you open the terminal, what is the output of this:

lsusb

This will list everything that’s connected via USB, and maybe the docking station too… or it could be hiding in:

lspci

Is it possible to connect the drive directly to your computer instead of the docking station?

My guess is one of three things could have happened which we will need to narrow down:

  • The docking station isn’t supported under Linux without needing additional software/drivers.
  • The partition table is corrupt (but could be recoverable with a tool called testdisk)
  • The HHD had a hardware failure - recovery will be a lot more complicated.

Thanks @lah7 for being hear and just to be sure about situation.
I was using 3 HHD and one SSD that I had internally in my computer before I burned the motherboard. Now that I’m on a laptop I have some external WD Disk connected through USB and this dockingstation (also USB) witch I use for the 3 internal HHD.
They were all sett up for Linux, I never used them on Windows.
It was just that I hadn’t reconnected the docking station witch had one of the HHD’s docked when I started to work on removing The Win10 from the laptop.

I have now gone through all you mention and the HHD want show it self in aither “DISKS” ore “TESTDISK”.
Now I also connected the HHD via a sata-USB cabel strait in the laptop, but its no were to be found. There is a connection because a ligth shows on the cabel.

The commands " lsusb & lspci " want even work in the terminal.

What does it say when you tried to run lsusb and lspci ? It seems unusual those commands are not working.

It sounds like the drive (or the cable) is showing signs of a hardware failure. :face_with_raised_eyebrow: You could try:

  • Another USB to SATA cable if you have one.
  • Put the drive inside an external drive enclosure.
  • Or try the drive into a different computer if you have one spare.

I’m not familiar with Hybrid Hard Drives, but does the drive make any noises when it’s plugged in? Also, is it the larger 3.5" drive (with external power) or smaller 2.5" drives (powered by USB)?

Since the HHD is both a SSD and HDD, it’s possible the “SSD” side of it called it quits, in which even the BIOS would not even recognise it. I’ve known 2 SSDs to just die and never work again.

A last resort may be unscrew the laptop and plug the drive directly into the laptop (assuming it’s SATA 3). You could use an Ubuntu MATE live session (USB or CD) to browse files, assuming the drive isn’t dead.
