The other day all of the topmost window bars disappeared after a reboot - I guess they are called title bars, on caja, terminal, firefox, etc. It was nearly impossible to type anything in those windows, such as the address bar of Firefox, or in the terminal window. Nor could I add the mate-panel applet (Window List) back in or alt-tab between windows.
Clicking on “Windows” in Control Center, it said “window manager is unsupported”. wmctrl -m indicated was running an unspecified window manager. Switching to Compiz still left everything with the same look, though I didn’t try going into Compiz’s settings manager, just went back to marco via Control Center. If I ever really did get switched to Compiz with that action…
The command “marco --replace” would always fix everything, but a reboot required the command to be run again…
I don’t remember what I was doing just before breaking the desktop, and it was easier to reinstall instead of spending any more time on it. What is the best way to reset marco back to its defaults, if that in fact was what was going on? The ability to reinstall marco was greyed out in Synaptic at the time. Now that marco is working, I see in Synaptic I could mark it for reinstallation.
