Hi!
I am new user with MATE Desktop Environment.
Can someone please please help me.
I want to change user language to English.
Now is German and I can't find where and how to do it. Under Settings is no option Language Support??
Version installed is now 1.8.1.
Thank you very much!

Here is a screenshot of gnome-language-selector
to help you along:
Not sure how you managed to get it into German, but with that you should be able to figure out how to get it out of German. Best of luck.
Why is it GNOME?
MATE began life as a GNOME 2.18 fork, and rather than MATE team write entirely new tools to replicate the 2.18 desktop the best they can with GTK3, they've purposed other GNOME project software. This applies to... well, everything, down to the file manager (caja
) which is just a fork of nautilus
, with pluma
being our gedit
and mate-terminal
being our gnome-terminal
. But this distribution in particular harvests and repurposes ideas from other projects, such as Solus' Brisk menu and Mint's Mint Menu (which we call mate-menu
).
So basicallly if it's been changed by MATE team, it has their name to it. If it's been unchanged from GNOME it retains GNOME branding. Same principles for other software outside the GNOME project.
Thanks Tiox!
I am new also with Linux...
Can you tell where to find or how to install gnome-language-selector?
Thank you very much!
System> Control Center> Language Support should get you there.
Good luck curos000.
Thanks, but I don't have Language Support there, just missing or I can not find it.
Maybe not installed, I have Debian 8...
Sorry, I just cant find it.
Thank you all!
I can share a picture from Ubuntu 16.04 LTS with MATE 1.12.1:
^ the icon is hovered by mouse here.
Or use terminal-based solution like
sudo dpkg-reconfigure locales # select en_US.UTF-8 here
localectl set-locale LANG=en_US.UTF-8
sed -i "s/de_DE/en_US/" ~/.dmrc
and then reboot.
Thanks Norbert!
I for sure don't have Language Support Icon but i did it with terminal.
It is easy now
