I installed mintMenu from Linux Mint repos. It is the one on the left. It has fine shadows, whereas advanced menu that comes default with UBUNTU-MATE has no shadows even with compositing enabled.
Is there a fix for this or is this a bug.

Mintmenu is ok without compton.
Menu transparencies work with all of the other menus. See below:
However, I do concede they do not work the Ubuntu-Mate-Advanced-Menu as I have just temporarily instated it and no shadows show. This does appear to be a problem with that specific menu. That is to say, I don't think (though I can't be certain) that the Mint-Mate-Menu is generating the shadowing. I think Compton is doing that. However, the Ubuntu Mate advanced menu seems to be blocking that feature. I don't know why. However, that being the case, you seem to have solved it by installing the mint version
