Mate Suitability

Hello. I became interested in this distribution from the well presented discussions on the Unplugged show.

I have been very happily using Gnome 3.16 on anther product which has recently let me down a bit with it’s rapid release cycle and infrequent breaking with updates, but I am hesitant to be a distro-hopper. I’d rather find the right one and learn it really well.

I primarily use our desktop at home for internet browsing, finances, and gaming (minecraft) as well as teaching linux to me and my 2 sons.

I absolutely am blown away by your welcome screen options and my understanding that it is a very stable distro, but due to a touch of RSI in the wrists I really like using the keyboard functionality of Gnome. There also seems to be a very supportive, thoughtful community here.

Are there any recommendations for someone who wants to use Ubuntu Mate, but also needs the keyboard functions of Gnome? Specifically moving, resizing, and launching with super+key? Thanks for any input.

Hi. I’m not certain which window manager GNOME 3 uses, but Ubuntu MATE has Marco (fork of GNOME 2’s metacity) and Compiz (backend for Unity 7) - So if it’s window management with the keyboard you’re looking for, one of these will have you covered (or should be easy to configure).

There’s also a way to set your own bindings with Keyboard Shortcuts to launch custom programs as you please.

A list of other commands can be found in the Getting Started section of the Welcome program.

Thanks, I was able to achieve similar window management and application launching with keyboard shortcuts just like you suggested. Very nice!
