I have a RW-DVD in my drive. Thunar sees it.
But Gparted does not.
I don't see it as bug, but as just different approaches to media.
thunar
and gparted
are rather different tools, thus having different approaches to how they treat inserted media will differ, let alone coming from different projects (Xfce versus GNU) with differing defaults/standards.
Giving specifics (ie. is the RW-DVD media blank? open? or what's on it?), plus release details may also reveal clues; as software/projects do change over time.
Regardless, this is only my opinion (which doesn't make it fact!)
I see that you are a Leader.
Do you contribute to the development of UM?
If so, what are your qualifications.
I need this information so I can craft a response to your queries.

I'm a user of Ubuntu-MATE. I am not a developer, and beyond some Quality Assurance testing (mostly on older hardware) much of what I do is elsewhere in the Ubuntu world (we're all one large family).
As it states here I'm involved with Ubuntu News (since 2015; a leader there now), started testing with the flavors (esp. Xubuntu, Lubuntu) when they warned i386 maybe dropped if more testers weren't forthcoming, which expanded to include Ubuntu-MATE and more.
( The leader you likely refer to is more of a Discourse software badge ie. my trust level is 4 and doesn't relate to Ubuntu-MATE directly )
Thanks for the clarification.
Please do not take it personal.
I have offered my help.
I enjoy helping others. It gives me joy.
