Menu editing question

Just installed bespoke Ubuntu Mate setup. This is Ubuntu Studio 14.04.2 with Ubuntu Mate 1.8 over the top. The reason being that Jack and some of the attendant music editing programs that run off it do not work at all in Ubuntu Mate 15.04 and do not work brilliantly in Ubuntu Mate 14.04.2, though they do more or less work. In Ubuntu Studio, because Jack and all of the various music editing programs come pre-installed, there are no issues with any of them. Also, I should say, Ubuntu studio comes with specially prepared low audio latency. when i am running my external midi keyboard, that can make a big difference to performance. However, Ubuntu Studio comes with XFCE, which I do not like. Hence the overlay with Ubuntu Mate, which I do.

It’s all running very nice, except for the menu needing a bit of tidying up due to several XFCE programs I do not need to access anymore. So, the plan is to simply hide those programs that are now redundant and also to create some extra sub-menus. Especially underneath the system menu in order to emulate the superior menu organizational structure of the system menu in Ubuntu Mate 15.04. This is where i have hit a problem.

When I create a new system/preferences sub-menu called “hardware”, it makes the sub-menu no problem. I can even tick it to make it visible., However, if I then try and drag and drop various items into it, they appear to drop in, only to pop back out again to their original location a second or so later. Anybody any idea what I am doing wrong?

No worries. Sussed it. You have to drag a menu item to the relevant menu on left hand side of the editor and not simply into the menu as it is seen above the item on the right hand side

Ubuntu MATE uses Alacarte I’m pretty sure for menu editing if you are referring to the panel main menus so you can right click items and remove them or you can uncheck the box next to them to hide.

Yeah, it’s okay M. I was actually talking about moving items about, but I have it sorted now thanks.

I’m not sure what issues you are having with Jack in 15.04. I had some starting issues shortly after first install but they cleared up in the first week of updates. I have had zero issues with Jack on 15.04 in the standard Ubuntu repos.
But I dont use it for midi. I am an audio only kinda guy, lol.

I think it is specifically a Jack/midi signal communication issue UB. And also, possibly, a problem with QT apps and Jack’s capacity to deal with them.
