Minimal Install

@Wimpy wondering if your going to make use of the minimal install check box in the new ubuntu installer?

Yes, I am planning on supporting that feature.

So, I’m thinking what would the reason’s be for using a Minimal install. Lack of disk space? Or just wanting less on initial install? Less time to install? Considering that there is no longer a 32 bit version, I can’t see it being widely used on old hardware that has very little disk space.

BUT, I can see it used, if I were to use a machine for some other primary use, like to watch TV / Netflix. I certainly don’t need an office package / Gimp / Xsane, etc on those kinds of machines.

I think I’ll use it. The first thing I do after installing is remove LibreOffice (I don’t use it), Thunderbird (I use webmail), Rhythmbox (I’ll install Quod Libet instead), Deja-Dup (I use different backup), and a few other. It’s not just about disk space, but also bandwidth for updates and just cluttering menus with things I’ll never use.

There are a few things I’ll probably add back — Gnome Disks, redshift and seahorse for sure — but they’ll be much smaller than what is removed.

Yea, I can see that.
