Mozilla blog Firefox 47 announcement, WidevineCdm, and ubuntu MATE

I first installed a MATE distro yesterday and like it very much! I watch Amazon video which does not work with Firefox today. April 8, Mozilla posted that Firefox 47 will include support of WidevineCdm. As I understand it, with DRM like Widevine, Firefox may be able to work with Amazon. Is that the case? Will Ubuntu Mate include Firefox 47 when it is available? If I were to get a Firefox 47 Beta and install it, will it function with MATE (I ask since Firefox comes with the MATE install package, and I am a Linux NOOB of sorts). A liitle background - Before finding MATE, I ran a 32 bit Ubuntu distro with Firefox and a User Agent Overrider plugin. I also had Chrome on it. I had Amazon working that way. Now if I try setting Firefox User agent to IE11, Amazon asks for ActiveX. If I set Firefox to Chrome 42, Amazon asks for WidevineCdm. Chrome itself is no longer supported by Google for 32 bit Linux. I run a laptop with AMD Turion 64X2, and think I have to run 32 bit OS for stability. I feel stuck and am hoping Firefox 47 is the solution. Any Ideas? Thanks for your time.

Hi
Have you ever tried the 64bits version of Ubuntu MATE on that laptop?
Wikipedia says the AM Turion 64 X2 is a 64bits processor.

Edit: and any browser update is usually considered a security update and therefore pushed to LTS releases of Ubuntu.

The beta release notes for FF 47 ( https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/47.0beta/releasenotes/ ) only mention Widevine support for Windows and Mac - no Linux so far.

What causes you to question the stability of 64 bit? As already mentioned, I’d recommend the 64bit installation of Ubuntu MATE and use the Chrome browser.

No, but I had tried 64 bit Ubuntu before and it did not work out.

OK. I had not noticed that. Thanks.

I do not remember specifically but had trouble running 64 bit ubuntu some time ago. I may try 64 bit ubuntu mate with Chrome as you suggest.

How much system memory do you have installed? You mentioned Ubuntu, perhaps the trouble was that of available resources as it pertains to the Unity desktop… MATE’S considerably lighter.

MATE System Monitor says 3.7GiB. Should be enough, I think.

Absolutely! Ubuntu MATE should run quite nicely on that box.

Well, 64 bit Mate does run. Loaded 64 bit Chrome and it does work with Amazon video! It took some messing around to get the wifi adapter working again, but all seems well right now. Thanks ouroumov, maximuscore, and Glenn.

Yay! You’re very welcome, have fun! :joy:
