I went to https://ubuntu.com/certified . The below item is a good price and rating.
But a search of the site does not find any Lite-On products.

My understanding is almost all SATA drives, internal and external will work. I bought a cheap WD external dvd player for my laptop and it works fine.
I've always had success with either ASUS or SONY. As Stephen mentionned, these are both SATA.
I’ve used many Lite-On drives, some I’ve owned and most others I provided support for.
They were relatively cheap, and worked reliably for a number of years, though subjectively I’d expect not as long [life] as some of the other [more expensive] brands, as I do recall needing to replace a number of them.
They both have similar ratings. I just discovered they are both used. ??
I did not know that Amazon sold used stuff.
I am curious, so I will see what new ones are.
Wallymart has a new Sony for $51 + $10 shipping. (For spending at least $35 on other items, it is free shipping.
All Ebay has is used or new Chinese branded DVD writers.
For me, here in canada, new is usually about $100 CDN.
That's about $73 USD, which seems a bit high. Do you live in a more isolated area? I grew up in a small town in Northern Wisconsin and prices are much higher there. I also go Ontario Canada and prices there vary from places like Toronto and Sioux Ste. Marie from Fort Francis and Sioux Lookout.
I used to live in the Houston, Texas area.
I dad a lot of "adventures" there.
But I do not miss the hurricanes.
I live in San Marcos, Texas.
It is pretty peaceful, lot of hills, deer going thru people yards.
It is a college town. Took me a good while to semi-adapt to young people.
I started to enter the crosswalk. I think God warned me not to cross.
The young driver blew his horn at me because he had to slow for me.
I told a young guy about the above story.
He said he carries rolled up pennies in his pocket.
I assumed he throws them at bad drivers.
Ottawa, Ontario
Around Toronto, you have a lot a "clearance" stores that offer stuff dirt cheap. "Up here", we are far enough (even with Montreal only 2 hours away) that prices tend to be a bit outrageous.
And, when I say $100, I mean all inclusive, with 13% sales/GST tax. You can get used stuff cheaper, but I only buy new.
Yes I am aware of the taxes one everything. And as I said I grew up in a small town rural area and things are certainly more expensive. I still.like to visit Canada whether the bigger cities or more rural areas. My great great grandfather was from Quebec which I would like to visit someday. Right now I have only been to Ontario.
