Hello, long story short i really want to stop using windows for multiple reasons and I tried installed various linux distros ( lubuntu ubuntu mate, lxle, debian, xubuntu, elementary os,linux lite,mx17, sparky linux) for the past 2 (two days!!) and I cant make it work. I only had sucess 2-3 but the wifi never worked. I cant get past the initial instalation process, either the screen turns black and nothing happends for 30 min… ori it freezes during the distro logo. what im doing wrong ? i made the bootable img using different programs on windows (etcher, rufus, unebootin, wintoflash, yumi). Curentlly im tryng to install ubuntu mate and the screen is either black or flickers with the graphics that look like this
I am new to linux as well, but I would post your hardware specs so that others can help you better.
Ubuntu seems to be compatible with most hardware.
Is your wifi internal or external?
Your problem may be a bios setting. Microsquish has done what it can to make switching to Linux hard. Read this:
https://www.linux.com/learn/how-install-linux-windows-machine-uefi-secure-boot
my wiereless is internal but yesterday i purchased a tp link wireless adaptor but i cant get any linux distro to the point of using it.
ps i posted a youtube video of the booting process and some screenshots of the bios maybe it will help
laptop model is hp stream 11 -r000nq
Your screen froze up really weird. Are you installing from a dvd or usb? If it is a usb, how old is your usb? They wear out fairly quickly if you move a lot of small files using your usb everyday. I feel like it is not copying over properly and it is corrupting files.
I second MikeyBee on the secure boot setting. I had to turn it off on mine as it caused a lot of issues and I couldn’t boot into either OS after that.
I boot it from a old usb stick I never knew that usb sticks wear out thas very new to me i will try a different one
edit: i tried a different usb stick same problems I guess the nice pepole from windows made a really good job making it hard to install a different os, wierd they never do a good job
BTW, I think there is a windows key that should be copied to a usb if you want to be able to boot windows again.
I searched the internet and found a couple of people using various distributions of linux on the same device so im not done yet.
Hallo Liviu_Stefan
HP say that this model only has a 32GB hard drive. From the HP specifications it looks as if it is a HP-Chromebook-thingy. Just as a guide, my root partition ( / ) currently uses a little over 30 GB.
Be warned, you may have a difficult path ahead of you. If you can contact a local LUG (Linux User Group) you may be able to tap into the profound knowledge their members often have.
My best advice,
if you can, obtain some more powerful hardware before continuing your journey into the FLOSS world.
Never give up!
I’m going to live outside the country for a while so I need a machine that does internet browing email video call etc. I think its enough for that, the problem is i tried changing settings in the bios I tried different usb sticks I tried different programs to boot the iso on the usb. I even made a 20 gb partition on my desktop to try linux and found a couple of tutorials on how to make a bootable usb and format a usb and still dosen’t work I run out of imagination.
edit: I think the problem is the 32 GB eMMC, I think linux has o problem with that and also I was installing 32bit versions of distros and the win10 that comes preinstalled with this is 64bit ( for a 2gb ram device 0_0 ). Does anybody know does it take something different to install linux on a eMMC stoarage ?
edit: 100% thats the problem…there are some workaround but there is only suppport for win10 . win7 dosen’t work either.
