I have a TP link N750 (TL-WDR4300) dual band router.
From router specs:
Simultaneous 2.4GHz 300Mbps and 5GHz 450Mbps connections for 750Mbps of total available bandwidth
My wife’s Windoze 10 computer can find both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands, but Ubuntu Mate 16.04 and 18.04 can only find the 2.4GHz band, Does anyone know why or if there is a fix to find and connect Ubuntu Mate to the 5GHz band?
Are you running UM on the same computer? Otherwise, the wifi card in the UM computer may not support dual-band. My laptop dual boot with Win7 and can see both easily.
No, I am not running Ubuntu Mate and Windows on the same computer. I do have Ubuntu Mate on 3 different computers and none can see 5GHz. I think the Dell desktop did when it was a Windows 7 computer before I wiped it and put Ubuntu on it, but am not sure. The other two are both HP laptops, and both started life as Win 7 computers. I did some looking on the Internet and 5GHz seems to be a problem, but I didn’t find any real solutions. I did check my Broadcomm BCM4313 and it looks like that only supports 2.4GHz. I will check the other two computers to see if they support 5GHz or not. Thanks I hadn’t thought of it being a hardware problem.
SOLVED
Thanks grenouille, I checked and you are correct., my wireless cards do not support 5GHz. My computers are older, and my main laptop was a refurbished one, which seems to be the problem. I didn’t realize 5 GHz was that new a technology.
It’s not, really. It’s just that it didn’t roll out that fast. In fact, my laptop came with a single band wifi card, but I found a nice dual-band 802.11ac card for $12 on Ebay. Works great ootb with UM, but it was a nightmare to get the old drivers out and replaced on W7.
*Note to self: next time just reinstall Windoze – it’s less effort!
