No audio-evolve III laptop

My daughters and I all have these super low end Evolve III laptops running Ubuntu Mate. For what they are they work nicely but no audio. In the sound preferences I see:

Celeron N3350/Pentium N4200/Atom E3900 Series Audio Cluster
1 output/1 input
Stereo Output+Stereo Input

We are all on 23.04/Lunar. I had been running the jellyfish LTS release and the audio device didn't even show up but after upgrading to 23.04 it shows up, but no sound. I have tried speakers and plugging headphones along with changing the connector between headphones/speaker in the sound preferences control panel, outputs tab.

Any suggestions on what we could try? I attached what I think is the relevant section of the dmesg output but maybe I'm missing something.

Thanks
-Dan

Welcome @danmc to the community!

I have that laptop and am running 22.04.3 on it. I get sound.

In the sound settings, under the Hardware tab the profile I'm using is Analog Stereo Duplex. Next to that is a button to test speakers. Is that what you're seeing?

This is what I see. Also, 1 of ours is the version with SIM card slot and the other two do not have that slot but all 3 are acting the same way with no audio.

I don't seem to have Analog Stereo Duplex as an option:

This is what I see. Have you looked into the Bios? I ask because it says your Hardware is disabled.

As an added thought. My system is from a fresh install where I allowed 3rd party drivers and such. Have you tried a fresh installation?

Wow. There are lots and lots of settings in the bios. I didn't obviously see disabled sound. I found that in the control panel as soon as I pick one of the settings, the "disabled" goes away.
As we poked around some we found that:

  • the laptop with the "v2" in the model (this one has the SIM card slot) puts out very very quiet sound to the headphone jack but nothing to the speakers. This was a fresh install from a couple of weeks ago.

  • the laptops (2 of them) that say model "MZB1164G64GW10" have no sound at all and those both were installed a few years ago and have been updated. I'll try a fresh install on one of those.

All 3 show the same device in the control panel.

Our workaround is bluetooth audio works and also a cheap USB audio interface works too.

How odd.

You confirmed a fresh install but not whether you checked the box for 3rd party software when you installed. Do you normally check the box or leave it unchecked?

Have the speakers ever worked before such as when it had windows installed?

That's about all I can think of. If you have ideas for me to check with my hardware, let me know. Mine is the one with the sim card slot. I removed the cell transceiver and replaced it with a SATA SSD.

Another thought is we may in fact be talking about different hardware. I turn mine over and the model is Maestro-EBook 11. And checking it shows a Celeron N3450. So we do have different Hardware. My mistake. Apologies.
