So I have read that Ubuntu MATE will no longer release the LTS, but will still be releasing versions every 6 months. Not sure where this will leave me as I have been on LTS since my early days of Ubuntu.
I started with Ubuntu 10.04 and have used LTS since then. Always sticking with the most supported versions, I moved to MATE when the Ubuntu went with the new Gnome. I didn’t like it so I switched to MATE 18.04 LTS and have never looked back. Does it matter if Ubuntu MATE doesn’t do the LTS? I am thinking they will still follow the every 2 year release coinciding with the LTS, though they won’t be able to call it LTS and It may only come with 6 months of support. I do not want to update evry six months, so I may be exploring alternaives like Mint MATE
I tend to agree with that, as long as they use the same repositories what is the difference? The updates will still be there. Will Ubuntu stop you from updating/upgrading 26.04? I doubt that. Ubuntu Mate uses the Mate desktop, but that isn’t part of Ubuntu LTS.
I guess if someone is really worried they can switch to Mint Mate.
The upcoming version of Linux Mint based on Ubuntu 26.04 LTS will be codenamed "Vanessa". This version follows the current release, Linux Mint 21.3, which is based on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS.
Linux Mint "Vanessa" will be released with the MATE Desktop Environment as one of its editions
I think people are worrying way to much:
Linux Mint 21 was the version based on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS. Linux Mint does not have a version specifically based on Ubuntu 24.04. (So what is the difference? Maybe I am missing something?)
Development Cycle: Linux Mint's development cycle often involves stabilizing existing features and refining the user experience rather than releasing a new version for every Ubuntu LTS.
I will stay here and see what develops. I also already signed up for Ubuntu Pro. Now if Ubuntu Mate 28.04 misses a LTS release too, probably time to move on.
We already spoke about this in this topic: Ubuntu Mate 26.04 will be released?
It’s a bit unnecessary to open multiple topics about kinda the same subjects imho.
You can transfer my comment to the other same topic if you want too.
sorry I didn’t see a topic with the LTS in the title, didn’t know there were other topics discussing this. I am hoping to stay with UM and upgrade every 2 years hoping that UM will allow upgrade to 26.04 and the 30.04. in 2 years time after that, ie: w/o upgrading to 26.10, 27.0, 27.10 and then to 30.04 - this is because I don’t always enjoy updating me system and I am fine with updating every 4 years
