No sound from speakers on display using HDMI

When I use Raspbian I get system sounds from the speakers connected from PI4 via HDMI. But when I use Mate no sound at all. How in mate do I get alert sounds from the HDMI display speakers? Thanks.

I had a similar problem what I do is click on the speaker icon at the top right , select sound settings,then click output , and then at "choose a device to configure" toggle between the choices shown. One of them should work. I have to do this every time I log in because mate dosen't remember my selection.

I have tried this many times, but no luck. I just don't want to purchase speakers for each Pi I have.

I used to have this problem, but several updates back I found that, once selected, the setting survived reboots.

I can't get any of the Hardware options to work, not even once. But like I said it worked well with Raspbian but not Mate.

I am having the exact same issue, and no amount of toggling works. Raspbian/RaspberryPi OS works fine. I have a Pi 400 if that matters.

I toggled it to the bottom selection and there is now sound, but not decent quality. At least sound out of Chromium sounds like it's breaking up from time to time.
