Non-LTS Resolute, Jammy, Upgrade in 2032

Hi. I was wondering if the issue of not granting LTS-status to Resolute is even an issue for me since I'm using Jammy until 2032--I'm still supposed to receive security updates. Isn't it bad for UM that they're not giving LTS status? Whatever happens with UM, I'm covered, right, because of the security updates that I will receive?

I don't really know why devs would not grant LTS-status that other flavors get-- with mate Tweak and many other docks installable, UM can be all things to all people.

An application for LTS [status] has to be made using the correct procedures. When no application is made for LTS status, why would it be granted?

Why would UM devs not want their OS to be given the same 5 years of security LTS that other flavors get-- if I'm understanding it right?

Reasoning: The team cited a shortage of resources and low contributor numbers

Wish I could give them a lot of money.

That topic has been extensively discussed in

(let alone other threads)

There were issues with the Ubuntu MATE team not meeting all requirements for the 25.10 release, but that was overlooked as releasing a 25.10 ISO is a requirement in applying for LTS status for 26.04. Myself I saw that 25.10 push as the Ubuntu MATE team leaving the option for a 26.04 release open, if they had motivation etc...

No decision has been made for a 26.04 release as I understand it, but if the release occurs it's expected to be a standard 9 month support release now (I gave examples of a prior flavor not having a LTS release on one of the other threads talking about this issue too).

We're in the final days before (12 Feb 2026) release of Ubuntu 24.04.4 LTS; which I talked about on another thread on this site, but I'm not expecting a Ubuntu MATE 24.04.4 LTS release either as the team didn't respond there, other flavors are involved in that 24.04.4 release though.

( MATE 1.28 got stuck in upload [Debian] some time back, due to problem the sole-uploader was unable to resolve... what we have now was uploaded as I mentioned (again elsewhere on this site) is due to a GNOME developer stepping in and resolving a MATE problem after a long period of it being stuck .. the issues relating to MATE impact Debian & all deb based systems as the work is shared somewhat. )

re: contribution numbers

If only 100 users were giving $5 a month, it would give some signal that this initiative is not dying.

p.s. BTW donation confirmation still indicate that it goes to Martin Wimpress…:red_question_mark:

Hi. I would gladly give $5 ($10, maybe-- as I did back in 2018 and another time, too). I believe the PayPal link listed that the money went to him at that time.

Hi Chris, does this mean that MATE Desktop is in trouble? Or I am getting it all wrong?

I’m just asking to get to know about if I (we) can keep using this desktop or I (we) should start looking to migrate somewhere else.

Thanks.

The MATE desktop is upstream of both Ubuntu and Debian...

I was talking purely about the deb packages sourced (source code anyway; packaged by a Debian+Ubuntu MATE team member), from that upstream MATE Desktop project, and are what we use down here on Ubuntu or when we use Debian... ie. the packaging of newer things is the current problem I talked about (ie. lack of resources at https://tracker.debian.org/teams/debianubuntu-mate-team/)

Also please be aware, I'm not a developer, nor a contributor to the MATE project, so my knowledge is somewhat limited (my view improves when closer to Ubuntu thankfully)

If you're happy with the MATE Desktop; on any currently supported release of Ubuntu, I see no reason to switch to another desktop.
