Not booting -- help!

Hello, I have a Framework laptop 13, last night I updated all the software on my device. Turned it off, next day I go to boot up and I get this error at the Framework logo screen:

"Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB lists possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB lists possible device or file completions. To enable less(1)-like paging, "set pager=1".

"grub> _"

I had important work saved on here, can it be rescued?

When I'm on this screen the fan starts blowing and the device heats up like a skillet.

Hi, @Johnny_McIvor

What version of Ubuntu MATE are you using?

Are there any other messages before that? If so can you take a picture of those messages (using, for instance, the camera of your smartphone to take a photo) and include it in a reply? That may help to diagnose why you're getting that GRUB message instead of getting a normal boot.

Maybe. IF the hard disk / SSD and the filesystem are both in good shape, then I think there is a good chance of being able to rescue your work.

I don't know precisely what version but it's jammy jellyfish

If updating your applications can corrupt the file system, then doesn't that mean that this is a very unstable OS? I didn't even perform this manually, I got a system prompt.

I had a conversation with ChatGPT about it. ChatGPT seems to think that it can be fixed with a boot repair

Hi again, @Johnny_McIvor

(Usual disclaimer / reminder: please note that I'm just another Forum user - and moderator - here. I'm NOT an Ubuntu developer or an Ubuntu MATE developer)

That's a very nice conversation you had with ChatGPT - "ChatGPT - GRUB Error Data Rescue" - https://chatgpt.com/share/68742797-b364-8013-9912-5fe48e23c871  For what it's worth, I agree with what ChatGPT told you. As ChatGPT told you, the first thing you should do is to boot into a Live session from a USB flash drive / pen drive created from the ISO of Ubuntu MATE 22.04 LTS ("Jammy Jellyfish") to back up your important files to some other media "(e.g., to another USB stick, external drive, or cloud)". From your conversation with ChatGPT:

:white_check_mark: Immediate Goal: Recover your files

Option 1: Use a Live USB

You’ll need a second computer and a USB drive (4GB+).

  1. Create a Live USB:
  • On another computer, download Ubuntu MATE or regular Ubuntu ISO.
  • Use balenaEtcher or dd to write it to a USB stick.
  1. Boot into the Live USB:
  • Insert the USB into the Framework laptop.
  • Hold F12 during boot to open the boot menu.
  • Select the USB device.
  1. Access your drive:
  • Once booted into Ubuntu, open the file manager.
  • Your internal disk should appear (it might be labeled with your username or just "Filesystem").
  • Click it — if it mounts successfully, browse to your home folder and back up your files (e.g., to another USB stick, external drive, or cloud).

Let me add to ChatGPT's information, that you can find the ISO file of Ubuntu MATE 22.04.5 LTS ("Jammy Jellyfish") in the following web page:

Specifically, the ISO file that you want is the following one:

https://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-mate/releases/22.04/release/ubuntu-mate-22.04.5-desktop-amd64.iso

I would just like to report that boot repair did in fact fix the problem, and now my computer is back to normal. Get a USB stick, burn a stable version of the os, and run it in trial mode. Then boot-repair

It's great that boot repair solved your problem, @Johnny_McIvor  Thanks for informing us!

Any warnings or notifications about what happened during an update are usually obscured/hidden by the interface. Sounds like the grub update (or similar) step failed in your case (some bug perhaps).

I update from the terminal because it displays warnings and notifications by default.

Glad you've got it up and running again!
