I want to go deeper into understanding how a CPU works and since i can´t overclock my Intel Core i7-3630QM in my Thinkpad i bought a cheap Tower PC on Ebay with a 550 W “be quiet” Power Supply and a i5 - 4670K i want to run Linux Mint Mate on to learn how overclocking works. Any hints for that particular CPU, or any help with choosing the right programs and settings for the beginning would be very helpful. I don´t know yet which Mainboard i gonna have or which BIOS.

Overclocking increases components (CPU, GPU, RAM) clock rate beyond manufacturer stock settings to achieve higher performance, such as better gaming frame rates or faster rendering.
Nothing to do with OS.
If you want to play with OS, compile your own kernel, modify sections, and re-test.
