I like this one - ubuntu-beginners-guide-complete-how-to-install-and-run-first-update
Lots of reading there. I'd read this, take a rest and come back and read again. Good luck CraigW.

Can you give us any information on where you think you are going wrong? Partitioning, boot loader (uefi), setting root directory, formatting hard drive? Does the OS not load? Does it load but not work?

What are you trying to install to, a tablet, laptop, desktop, or raspberry pi? What is the make and model? Did you check the hashes after download? What program are you using to extract and burn the OS? Are you using a DVD or USB drive?

The more detailed information you can give the better help you will receive.

Hello and thanks very much for helping me. I appreciate it a lot.
I have a Dell desktop Optiplex 780, and downloaded the ISO file to a flash drive
and was pretty much lost after that. I guess I am used to Windows and using an EXE file
to do things. Do i move the ISO file to my hard drive or leave it on the USB stick?
I kind of want to dual boot into Windows or Linux but that seems even more complicated.
thanks again....Craig

There are many YouTube videos that walk you through the process. I like Explaining Computers and he did a recent video on getting started with Ubuntu. It's here:

He's pretty thorough.

thanks so much, it is appreciated!

Please read or watch a tutorial. Don't download the ISO to the USB drive, but a folder on your computer. You need a program like Etcher, Rufus or LILI. Those programs extract the ISO and burn it to a USB drive or DVD. Then you have to boot the USB drive (usually by pressing an F key while the system is booting up, but it varies by computer). Then the install media will come up. Ubuntu Mate is very easy to install, but still can be confusing. Good luck.
