A 64gb sd card will be fine in most cases, the question being the amount of storage you will need to do what you want to do. I usually run my Pi's on smaller sd cards.
SanDisk and Samsung sd cards have worked very well in my experience.
You can use a SSD drive. You will need an adapter for it. Be advised that while it will be faster you will be limited by the Pi's USB 2.0 port speed.
