Pluma Lag - Thoughts?

Hello Community,

I was curious if others have noticed the Pluma lag?

I really like Pluma and in fact use it as my BASH and PHP programming environment along with working with text files and such. Still I have noticed Pluma can get really laggy (is that even a word?) at times.

What happens is there is a delay or lag when typing, which gets really annoying. Now before you ask yes the system is fine. There is plenty of RAM free often 4GB to 5GB open and the multi-core CPU isnā€™t under load often around 10 to 20%.

In fact when Pluma is lagging I can fire up LibreOffice and it is fine, typing in the web browser is fine, typing in Zim Wiki is fine, etc. Then back to Pluma it is laggy so something is happening with this specific app. I am not really sure what is going on.

System:

  • Ubuntu MATE 16.04.3 LTS
  • Marco (Compton GPU Acceleration)
  • Nvidia 650 Ti with Nvidia propriety drivers installed

So have you seen this? If so have you fixed it?

Thank you!

Hmmmā€¦ I have not noticed this. I donā€™t typically write very lenthy passages in Pluma, though I use it a lot throughout the day for this and that. Iā€™ll have to keep an eye on itā€¦

I use Pluma a decent amount, and I haven't noticed it, but I mostly am opening small files. Are your files large? Do you have a lot of files open at once?

Definitely! (sense 2)

Thanks for the feedback.

The lengths vary. I am not sure when you would start classifying something as large.

I am not opening say 10MB files. I would say big for me is a few thousand lines of code with the file size usually way under 100KB probably 50KB is large for me.

Pluma does stay open a lot. I guess it is possible it isnā€™t unloading everything from memory. I rarely shut down Pluma and the workstation just runs for days, sometimes weeks, between reboots. I really dislike shutting down or rebooting systems. I usually only reboot for patching.

I can try closing Pluma and reopening it the next time it gets laggy to see if that helps. I canā€™t remember if I have tried that or not but it is worth a shot. This has been an issue for well over a year. I have just lived with it.

Iā€™ll report back either way for the community.

Yes, I was vague because I don't know either :stuck_out_tongue:

Just a thought. I don't play with this often and it took me awhile to find it. Pluma will colorize code and It's in the menu View -> Highlight Mode.

I hardly see any code other than bash/sh scripts but are you using a higher level language? Try "Plain Text" and see if it gets... delaggied (couldn't resist).

Like the others I've never seen this so we're looking for something unique.

I am only using Pluma for text, BASH, and PHP.

That is a good idea. The next time it gets laggy Iā€™ll try messing with Highlight mode. If that doesnā€™t work Iā€™ll try the shutdown/reload Pluma idea.

Iā€™ll report either way once Pluma acts up again, which it will.

Delaggied āœ“

I had a minor issue with keyboard lag in 17.04 Pluma and Terminal - Using a wireless logitech.

The advice I received was to change the selected ā€œKeyboardā€ definition to another in the list. I had to go through the list quite a ways. But, I did find a best fitā€¦ And, the lag resolved.

Worth a try?

I am using a wired USB keyboard but will keep that in mind. You never know.

Thanks!

Just another thought. You might try disabling plugins in the Pluma preferences to get a vector.

Some general thoughts. Once Pluma is lagging is it every or particular files? Does anything change the behavior like closing all instances? Does it happen as the undo buffer gets big? Could a font or theme selection be involved? Multiple Tabs? Mounts of open files changing?

All to attempt delaggification.

.. disabling plugins in the Pluma preferences to get a vector.

Good idea.

Once Pluma is lagging is it every or particular files?

Everything

Does anything change the behavior like closing all instances?

Closing tabs doesn't help.

Does it happen as the undo buffer gets big?

Unknown; testing needed.

Could a font or theme selection be involved?

Anything is possible. I am not using the stock theme. Ambiance Flat Blue is my theme.

Multiple Tabs?

Multiple tabs are almost always open. Is this the cause? Unknown.

Mounts of open files changing?

Not that Pluma is using. I do mount and umount SSHFS but rarely is Pluma accessing those files.

delaggification => is the goal.
