Hi great OS, installed on one desktop and this here Dell E5510 laptop. Thanks for making drivers available for wireless on old Dells. On the laptop when I go to power settings it crashes and goes to the login screen. Can I delete the existing power manager and install another? Or fix this one?
Hi, @0razmataz and welcome to the Ubuntu MATE Community!
To remove Ubuntu MATE's (default) power manager, open a terminal:
sudo apt remove mate-power-manager
Some others are available in the official software repositories, e.g.:
- gnome-power-manager - the power manager for the GNOME desktop - the default for Ubuntu.
- xfce4-power-manager - power manager for xfce, the desktop manager used by Xubuntu.
- ukui-power-manager - power manager for UKUI desktop, I haven't tested on MATE but no harm in trying it. Has a lot of additional dependencies compared to the other two.
I would also encourage you to report a bug, see Bug Reporting and Triage | Ubuntu MATE.
Got it Stephen, thanks that was quick. i have tried xfce4 with LXLE OS, trying to subvert their in-house annoying screen lock but it still appeared. In this case it should work fine after the Mate pwr mgr removal. thanks and best wishes.
Thank you Bombilla, I am feeling really good about joining the Mate community. I have a few laptops and desktops and have killed all my Windows except for one and as soon as my new Ram arrives I will switch it also. I have full Ubuntu on this one and am very happy with it too. So I have Mate on a laptop and an old desktop to test it and will probably use Mate on the remaining daily driver when the Ram comes. Right now there is a Postal strike here in Canada.
Cheers to you and the others.
Results of a quick search make me think that the problem is in Dell E5510 ACPI implementation.
I'd advise to try
- load OS with grub
acpi=off
kernel option; - verify BIOS ACPI settings and, probably, turn it off, if possible.
Good luck!
Hello Eugene and thanks. Yes there is something different about the E5510 compared to my other laptops, D830's and actually a d520 which runs Linux lite very well. Mate is the only OS that I can actually put on that 5510, all others failed when I wiped Windows. I "heard" that some Western Digital hard drives have a problem with Linux due to some timing issue so I put in an older Toshiba drive in and still having problems as described. So finally a clue as to why I have such a h of a time putting Linux on. Otherwise it is a great laptop with 8GB Ram and I have a new hi capacity battery for it. Going to be busy for a couple of days but I will definitely try that fix. Long winded here but also I am curious where you found this information. I appreciate your reply.
You are welcome, Jas!
Well, all power management revolves around ACPI. That was why I did search for 'linux Dell E5510 laptop ACPI'.
Very good sir! lots to learn.
