I bought a HP printer deskjet 2710. I have not been able to make it work. Maybe because it is a new model, because my last printer, also a Hewlett Packard, did well. What printer does work in ubuntu mate?
Hi,
What Ubuntu MATE release are you using ? I guess it is 20.04 LTS.
This recent printer is supposed to work out of the box with Ubuntu MATE 20.10.
In Ubuntu MATE 20.04 LTS, you need to install the latest hplip in custom mode:
https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imaging-and-printing/gethplip
Got it from a french user that had the same problem:
https://forum.ubuntu-fr.org/viewtopic.php?id=2059321
This printer model should work normally with HPLIP from official repository. Install it with:
sudo apt-get install hplip-gui
hp-setup
hp-plugin
If this method fail - only then use binary installer, as recommended above. Or follow this Q&A on AskUbuntu.
Answers:
for install hplip: ok
for setup: no devices found
for plugin: installation succesful
again setup: no devices found
Would it be the solution to update to mate 20-10?
Or I can buy an older model printer. Which one is already working under Mate 20.04?
Hi Josep-Maria,
I have had problems with an HP printer scanner as well - an M29w. One suggestion that I was given that worked can be found at Hplip missing files .
The printer also worked after I did a fresh 20.04 UM install (nuke and pave method).
HP printers and scanners have become really problematic for reasons that are not clear to me. So, my suggestion might just be more noise. Good luck.
Thanks HJV. I followed the suggestions and was able to install the HPLIP-GUI 3.20.3. The good thing is that it did not affect the printing aspects of my HP M29W printer/scanner. Scanning still fails, however, unless I use the VUESCAN application. "gscan2pdf" and "document scanner" fail with the HP. I guess that there is some "sane" problem. So for scanning I continue to use VUESCAN for any of my scanners or I scan with my Epson devices, which work with "gscan2pdf" and "document scanner" and VUESCAN. Perhaps a future HPLIP 3.21.? will address Ubuntu 20.04 distros.
I hate printers and scanners! (I lack the skill to dig in to find and fix problems like these.)
Thanks again.
I think Maté comes preloaded whir the Simple Scanner app and it has automatically detected my all-in-one HP 6978 printer/scanner/fax. Hopefully you will be able to figure it out soon. Thankfully, Maté just finds it lessening headaches for me. Good luck!
You might have a look at that:

"remove the “ippusbxd” package".
I have updated to 20.10, and my printer works. Thanks a lot.
