I have a Brother MFC-J480DW and only had trouble installing it on one OS and that was because it was a sandboxed OS which I did not understand how to get past that. Otherwise every other OS (all Debian based) I have put it on it has worked. I recommend you use their supplied drivers. The link will take you right to your driver.
I installed it on 4 Ubuntu Mate, Mint, Debian, Spiral and Sparky with no problems. Parrot was the one that gave me problems.
Once you extract it, it is this easy:
cd Downloads
sudo bash linux-brprinter-installer-2.2.1-1
model no. MFC-J480DW
Will you specify the Device URI? [Y/n] ->n
Test Print? [y/N] ->y
Hi UM22.04.1 have that printer and only had two issues so far. One was have it on a remoted usb hub and the hub failed, that time had to bring printer to computer and go direct into usb to find.
Other is sometimes the after initiating print the machine whirls and stops with a blinking light. Not a jam and plenty of paper. Seems like for some reason every once in awhile it fails to pick up the sheet. Usually just have to press the button on printer and it picks up paper and prints. Static?
Just a thought
I can't find it but I have read installation media is not always full featured. That may be the problem. Has anyone had success setting up printers on installation media?
Sometimes the Brother HL-2240 does not reset properly after putting in a new cartridge, and leaves you with a 'toner low' or 'toner empty' message. It is possible to manually reset the printer to remove this message:
Ensure the printer is turned off.
Open the printer front cover.
Hold the Go button while turning the printer on.
When the Toner, Drum, and Error LEDs are on and the Ready LED is off, release the GO button. All of the LEDs will turn off.
Press the Go button two (2) times. The Toner, Drum, and Error LEDs will turn on.
TN420 / TN2210 cartridge - Press the Go button six (6) times, or
TN450 / TN2220 cartridge - Press the Go button seven (7) times.
The Error LED should now be flashing, close the front cover.
I did that and the light was still blinking. I was about to salvage parts from the printer when I found a piece of paper that was jammed up.
Printer now working.
I will make a sticker that says, "Check for paper jams."
