Problem with Openconnect

Hello all. My name is Beni. I am a newcomer to Ubuntu 18.06 from Windows 7. I have installed all the packages shown by Synaptic to install Openconnect, which I want to use instead of cisco anyconnect, which I have been unable to install on Ubuntu 18.06. According to Synaptic, everything related to Openconnect is installed, but Openconnect is nowhere to be found in my computer and I cannot connect to my University’s VPN. Could anybody give me a hand, please? Thanks, Beni

Hi @jeporsak, welcome to the Ubuntu MATE community

I use openconnect at work to connect to a Cisco AnyConnect VPN. After it’s installed, you should be able to access it from the network manager app. Probably the easiest way to access it is by clicking on the network icon in the panel. If there’s a VPN entry, you should be good to add a new connection and configure it there. If not, select Edit Connections and there should be options to create your configuration.

Let me know if this works or not and I can verify how I set it up tomorrow when I’m at the office.

Hi vkareh!

Thanks very much for your swift response! I click on “administration” and then on “network”, which leads me to “network settings”, a panel with three things: “general”, “DNS” and “Hosts” (there are seven of them). There is no VPN entry. Also, there is no mention whatsoever of “openconnect”, though Synaptic keeps saying that all the corresponding packages are installed (??).

I have tried the other route you propose and click on Edit Connections. I am given the choice to create a “Cisco Anyconnect Compatible VPN (openconnect)” connection, but you have to configure everything manually, something which, being a newbie to Linux, I do not have the faintest idea how to do.

In the Windows version of my Uni’s Cisco Anyconnect, all we have to do is install the app and introduce the Uni’s URL server the first time we connect to the Uni’s VPN .Then Anyconnect asks for your username and password and it establishes the VPN connection immediately. From then on, Anyconnect remembers the Uni’s URL server and all you have to do is type your username and password.

If you could tell me how you successfully set up openconnect in your office without having to manually configure everything I would be most grateful!

Cheers,
jeporsak

That's the right place, actually - there are tons of options, but not all of them are necessary. The URL is really the "Gateway" field.

Here's my configuration (I blurred the private bits):

In my case I have the Gateway set to my VPN's URL: vpn.example.com. I also have a certificate, which may or may not be necessary in your case. That's it!

You should now be able to enable the VPN by clicking on the network icon, there should be an entry for VPN Connections, select the one you just added and it will prompt you for the username/password.

If you need the certificate, and you don't have it, you might need to yank it from a Windows machine that has it - not sure if/whether that's doable. Some universities have the certificate available for download somewhere on the web. Another trick that I've used is to go to the gateway directly in Firefox (https://vpn.example.com) and Export the certificate file into your computer, and then plug it into the VPN configuration window. Again, this may or may not be necessary, given your VPN's config.

Good luck!

Hi vkareh,
Thanks again for your swift response! Turns out that after having been tinkering with the terminal line Cisco Anyconnect has got installed in my computer. It even works… I confess I do not know what I’ve done which is why I am sorry I cannot let know the community know how to get Cisco Anyconnect working on their computers. Anyway, thanks very much for your detailed advice!
