Using the above software under default Mate desktop settings is made difficult because the tooltips are in the wrong colours
The problem seems to be a bug reported under Ubuntu themes package (see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubuntu-themes/+bug/1332100)
The solution I have used is to configure the appearance of all Qt applications using qt-config (see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M2W_7YsUiGE). Credit to Andrew Mustun of QCAD
To access Qt under Mate desktop go System/Preferences/Look and Feel/Qt 4 Settings
Default settings found
- GUI Style = GTK+
- Tooltip Colour = White
- Fonts= Medium Italic
Change settings to
- GUI Style = Cleanlooks
- Tooltip Colour = Black
- Fonts= Regular
