Question about PRONOUNCIATION

hi! only a few days in, came in from Ubuntu 14.04, which was great- but this is just UNBELIEVABLE. wonderful! I am actually getting that " I might actually pass this algebra test!" feeling! for a person who can barely restrain her phone from sending unauthorized texts, and who doesn’t really know how to use a digital cameral- this feeling is REMARKABLE. now. how do I SAY IT?? when I want to tell people- is it Ubuntu-mate, like “ultimate” or is it a stand alone word, like MAH-tay? you have no idea how many friends I have on FB who are doing what I was doing, limping along with an old computer, with Microsoft heaving update after update on your crumbling vehicle. thanks for this!

I never even considered the first option you mentioned (kinda cool!) but I'm pretty sure it's the second: Ubuntu MAH-tay

OO-BOON-TOO MAH-TAY

but i never say it like that lol

It really doesn’t matter

I personally pronounce it mate (m8) as in friend but it is (should be) Mah-Tay!. As @stevecook172001 points out above, it doesn’t really matter though!.

It’s up to you. Even the project leader @Wimpy has said in podcasts he doesn’t mind how it’s said.

The original is:

  • MAH-TAY

(Comes from Spanish, as @wolfman points out)

Or say it as it is:

  • MAY-TE

According to mate-desktop.org it is MA-TAY:

Where does the name come from?
The name “MATE”, pronounced Ma-Tay, comes from yerba maté, a species of holly native to subtropical South America. Its leaves contain caffeine and are used to make infusions and a beverage called mate.

But I do not care how you pronounce it, just as long as you do not say it is an English word

I tell people it rhymes with latte. I think that works pretty well internationally.

THE WRONG WAY
Overheard at a hot dog stand: “I want a bun, too, mate!”

As far as I know it is just me, @wolfman

MATE word comes from the grass that grows in Chile and Argentina, the pronunciation is different in Spanish and in English. I searched for a word to give you an idea, for people who speak English would pronounce the word MATERIAL, removing RIAL. and that is the Spanish pronunciation. regards…
