Random Lockups in Mate 16.04

I have been having random lockups that I am not sure how to track down the culprit. Have tried multiple distros, and it seems any ubuntu based distro from 15.10 to 16.04 suffer the freeze up. (System is completely unresponsive) Is there a good troubleshooting guide for Mate? Are there any command line queries and or log files that I should be looking at?

Hi jmarkus

Please post your system specs. Open a terminal (Ctrl+Alt+t) and enter:

inxi -b

You can look for crash reports in your file system /var/crash and var/log/apport.log also scroll to the bottom of /var/log/syslog and look there.

Here are the specs

It’s locking up constantly. The Board rev is 1.04, and I notice the graphics core is rv360, but it seems to think it is rv350 too? There was nothing in the /var/crash. apport.log is full of errors that seem to all be firefox plugin and/or flash related.
Literally four pages of this typical one (below)

I swapped out the ATI AIW 9600 XT for a ATI 9700 XT - which generates these spec changes

The syslog is over 236 pages long now?

Seems all the trouble was known back a few months ago. Sure would have been nice if the installer had warned that older ATI graphics, and older AMD K7 cpus are a toxic combo that won’t work in the newer ubuntu based releases. I swapped out the graphics again to a nvidia 6200, and the computer is as happy as a pig in poo. Mark this one “Solved”…and recommend nvidia graphics for 16.04
